inward or up into a collection
nehmen
to take

Take something in and bring it into your possession, a recording, or a collection.

So aufnehmen means to take in, record, or include.

A memory aid, not a rule: prefixes change meaning from verb to verb.

Separable verb: auf·nehmen

In a main clause the prefix auf splits off and goes to the end. After weil, dass and other subordinating words, the verb stays in one piece at the end.

Main clauseIch nehme heute ein Lied auf.I am recording a song today.
Subordinate clauseEr bleibt, weil wir ihn aufnehmen. He is staying because we are including him.
Participle: aufgenommenzu-infinitive: aufzunehmen
