Build the meaning
ein- + schätzen
- ein-
- into a considered range or category
- schätzen
- to estimate or value
You estimate something and place it into a considered range or category.
So einschätzen means to assess or judge.
A memory aid, not a rule: prefixes change meaning from verb to verb.
Learning approach inspired by this explanation in r/German.
Separable verb: ein·schätzen
In a main clause the prefix ein splits off and goes to the end. After weil, dass and other subordinating words, the verb stays in one piece at the end.
Main clauseEr schätzt die Arbeit als leicht ein.He judges the work to be easy.
Subordinate clauseIch frage sie, weil sie den Preis gut einschätzt.I ask her because she estimates the price well.
Participle: eingeschätztzu-infinitive: einzuschätzen
