Build the meaning
an- + merken
- an-
- onto or toward something
- merken
- to notice or note
Think of noting something down or adding a note to what is being discussed.
So anmerken means to remark or note; in some constructions, to notice something about someone.
A memory aid, not a rule: prefixes change meaning from verb to verb.
Learning approach inspired by this explanation in r/German.
Separable verb: an·merken
In a main clause the prefix an splits off and goes to the end. After weil, dass and other subordinating words, the verb stays in one piece at the end.
Main clauseEr merkt ihr die Angst an.You can tell she is afraid.
Subordinate clauseSie lächelt, weil man ihr die Freude anmerkt. She smiles because you can tell she is happy.
Participle: angemerktzu-infinitive: anzumerken
