Build the meaning
an- + melden
- an-
- toward or to a relevant person or place
- melden
- to report or notify
You notify the relevant office or person that you or something is being entered.
So anmelden means to register or sign up.
A memory aid, not a rule: prefixes change meaning from verb to verb.
Learning approach inspired by this explanation in r/German.
Separable verb: an·melden
In a main clause the prefix an splits off and goes to the end. After weil, dass and other subordinating words, the verb stays in one piece at the end.
Main clauseEr meldet sich jetzt an.He’s registering now.
Subordinate clauseIch bleibe hier, weil ich mich dort anmelde.I’m staying here because I’m registering there.
Participle: angemeldetzu-infinitive: anzumelden
